Firefighting Safety Solutions from Dräger

Recent trends show a rise in occupational cancer among firefighters, prompting a shift away from old practices like retaining soot-covered gear towards more protective measures. This change aims to increase awareness among Command Staff and Incident Commanders about the risks on the ground.

Dräger addresses firefighters’ multifaceted dangers with safety products for immediate and long-term risks, including fire, toxic gases, carcinogens, and cardiovascular issues.

Firefighter SCBAs by Dräger

The SCBA, vital for modern firefighting, offers maximum protection against toxic gases and particulates from fires. Dräger, pioneering modern SCBAs for firefighters, marked 80 years of innovation in 2021. Significant advancements over these decades, especially in comfort, define Dräger’s SCBAs.

They ensure a snug fit, enabling firefighters to move freely as situations demand. The PSS® 7000 model features height adjustment for enhanced ergonomics, while masks come in nine sizes for a perfect fit. All Dräger SCBAs comply with the 2019 NFPA 1981 and 1982 standards.

Gas Detection by Dräger

Carbon monoxide (CO) and hydrogen cyanide (HCN), known as the Toxic Twins, are hazardous gases commonly found on the Fire Ground. Their combined presence is significantly more dangerous. Dräger exclusively offers a detector that specifically alerts to dangerous levels of these gases in combination, a feature not available in standard gas detection systems.

Additionally, Dräger provides an extensive array of portable gas detection systems for firefighters, ranging from single-gas detectors to multi-gas units, HazMat kits, and area monitoring equipment, ensuring comprehensive safety in various firefighting scenarios.

The Healthy Firefighter

According to the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), firefighters have a 29% higher risk of contracting various types of cancer than the rest of the U.S. population. They are 1.39 times more likely to develop skin cancer and 1.31 times more likely to be diagnosed with brain cancer.

What needs to change? Raising awareness about this critical issue and increasing protective measures can help protect the health of firefighters.

Air-Purifying Respirators by Dräger

SCBAs are the optimal choice for breathing protection in firefighting, but not all departments can equip every firefighter with one. During certain fire stages, where the air is breathable but smoke and soot particulates are the main hazard, cost-effective alternative airway protections may suffice, particularly in the Overhaul and Investigation phases.

However, any alternative to SCBAs should be complemented with gas detection tools to ensure safety from toxic gases. These measures offer a balance between protection and affordability, adapting to varying conditions and resource constraints on the Fire Ground.
